Strategy and Tectics for Winning the Political Wars in the Office

STRATEGY AND TACTICS FOR WINNING THE OFFICE POLITICKING WARS

By: John R. Halstead

In the first part of this topic we identified office politics and the some of the major types of players that we will encounter. Some ideas for handling different political types were discussed. In this part I am going to describe tactics that range from small actions to all out war. Some of these tactics will seem harsh, malevolent, and even immoral. The bottom line is that depending on an individual’s values and ethical beliefs these can be used at extreme levels. As the tactics become more extreme you will need to ask yourself if these tactics are for you. In the more extreme the answer might come down to whether the ends are justified by the means. Lets start with some basic strategies that you can use for the more common political issues you may face at work and then move to the more extreme.

As a starting point you sense that not everyone is pure in their motives and that you may be used by another to advance their cause, mistreated, and lied about. You are not interested in advancing yourself but rather you want to be protected from others and you simply wish to defend yourself. What are some tactics you can use?

One of the most powerful ways to defend yourself from other coworkers, complaints, disciplinary action, termination, and lawsuits is by keeping good documentation.

Email

Email is an excellent tool for documenting. Here are some basic guidelines for using email.

·        Always date

·        Time

·        Location

·        Who was involved?

·        Names of all witnesses

·        Use direct quotes. Put them in quotation marks.

·        Write a brief factual account of what happened. Avoid opinions.

·        Send email as soon as possible.

·        Send a copy to yourself and print a hard copy to take home.

·        If you were disciplined or had a meeting with a supervisor document the meeting just as stated above. T

Regardless of who you are sending the email to end with a sentence such as:

·        Have I accurately summarized the main points from our meeting? If not please let me know in writing or

·        I believe that this email is accurate; if it is not, please let me know.

·        Can I assume that this situation is now resolved? If not, please let me know.

The power here is that you are taking a verbal conference with someone and making it evidence instead of a case of “he said, she said.”

Audio Recording

In most states it is legal to record a conversation if one person involved in it is aware and consenting. With smart phones you always have a recording device. Record conferences, meetings, discussions with others about the facts of an incident that support your position. This not only keeps an accurate record, but the person is also more likely in conversation to be more candid. In the case that you are discriminated against or other illegal or improper behavior occurs you have proof. Furthermore, if somebody lies about what happened you can catch them in lie and their credibility is damaged.

Records

Keep all handouts, records, write ups, and so on at home.

Reputation

Maintaining your reputation is crucial. I heard G. Gordon Liddy, one of the Watergate burglars say that he could come to the town you lived in and ruin your reputation. How? By simply accusing you of something. About half the people will believe it and half will not. Most everyone will question and think about it.

To protect your reputation be reliable, honest, admit when you are wrong, and be true to your word. Avoid gossip or manipulation. If people get to know you, they will stand by you when an accusation does not line up with who you are. Also, keeping documentation, recordings, witness names, and records you may have collected evidence that will exonerate your good name.

When it comes to intentional false attacks on your character and reputation you must protect yourself or be labeled falsely in any number of cruel ways.

PART ONE: OFFICE POLITICS

Office Politics

by: John R. Halstead

Have you ever started a job with the firm resolution that you are not going to get involved in the office politics?

How did it work out? My guess is that if you stayed at the job exceptionally long you were sucked in perhaps without even realizing it. You see whether you are the person leveraging the power structure to get what you want or if it is somebody else it is all so close to our nature we have to be alert. You may be a pawn being used without your knowledge. Often it seems good people are fooled into thinking they are being altruistic by assisting others when in fact they are being played as “useful idiots.” The nice guy that is always sharing with you how he is being treated unfairly. The guy that says he does not want to stand up for himself despite being oppressed. He admires you for your courage and explains how they would never treat you the way they do him. Finally, you get to the point that you feel morally obliged to stand up for your friend. He just used you to complain on his behalf and he gets to keep his reputation for being a team player with a positive can-do attitude. Another is the group that all has the same complaint, but nobody is willing to say anything. They have spotted that you have guts and that you do not stand for injustice. Over time their stories start to enrage you and so you arrange a meeting with the boss. Once in the meeting you candidly explain the issues at hand and then watch as everyone says they have not had any problems in these areas.

Everybody has personal goals and often they are the most ambitious at work. Some people will go to great lengths to advance their agenda. The reality is that office politics or maneuvering behind the scenes can make or break your career. Minding your business while someone is in the process of trying to advance can destroy your career as they may put you in the middle of their plans or they may pretend to care about you and your success while they go to the boss with lies designed to destroy you. So what can you or should you do? First, you need to define your objectives. If you want to cover your proverbial backside and have no other issues then you can use the same tactics as those who are out to destroy another worker as they just discovered they have been betraying them. The difference in how you design your strategy and tactics will depend on your desired outcome. Some people have bosses that are cruel, and their goal is to get them demoted or fired. Others may wish to destroy the entire organization. With so many possible scenarios let us look at some basic tactics for defending yourself all the way to leading a revolution.

In Business News Daily Editor 6 types of office politicians are defined.

The Gossip Hound, Credit Thief, Flatterer, Saboteur, Lobbyist, and the Advisor.

The Gossip Hound is the office know it all that is always sharing confidential information about their coworkers, bosses, and even on social media. The key to dealing with this political type is to stick to business and only as needed. Do not let yourself stray into sharing your personal life. Its hard but unless you want to have your personal life shared and likely embellished so that the gossip hound can create a false and damaging picture of you while simultaneously making themselves look better you must avoid social interaction.

The Credit Thief intends to do whatever necessary to advance. This includes taking credit for your work and ideas. Defend yourself from this type by speaking to other workers about what you are working on and by providing brief updates on your work, so they know who the source is when the credit thief strikes.

The Flatterer is a but kisser that throws out insincere compliments and is impossible to trust. Fortunately, most bosses can spot these types very quickly.

The Saboteur is completely self-serving is publicly critical of others, and will betray you without a second thought. Confrontation can work with these types. More on this shortly. Also, keep documentation of their behavior. Write it down, note time, witnesses, and so on. If needed take this arsenal to human resources or the boss.

The Lobbyist is a powerful player that has a reputation for influencing decisions in his or her favor. To deal with this type speak up when you disagree with them.  They will not like it, however, explain your viewpoint and build a case for it. This may help to change minds including the lobbyist.

The Advisor is the person that the company leaders go to when they need help making decisions. The way to handle the advisor is to become his friend and ally. They have the power to make things happen for you with the key players in power.

In the next post, I will discuss tactics that range from silencing the gossip hound to bringing the organization or powerful players down.

My passion in life is to bring you information ideas and provoking means for expanding of your world. I have discovered my life’s purpose. Simply put it is to have a profound effect on people. If you really break it all down everything else dies. Now I am not doing this half ass. My goal is to empower, challenge, inspire, and share knowledge with you that will lead you to your optimal potential

HABITS OF SUCCESS

 Habits of success

·        Be aware of your thoughts and behaviors

·        identify problems and go to work on them before they become ingrained

·        habits are things that we do repetitively and may very well not be aware of them best we must encourage ourselves to start new habits to replace the old ones and practice them in are a very repetitive manner it is also important that we're vigilant monitoring ourselves so that we continue to monitor to recognize any destructive behaviors were continue to engage in

Identifying some of the key components of success and failure it should make our task of observing ourselves and in designing new thoughts beliefs and habits much more clear in its v

·        confidence

·        belief in self deliberate flaw

·        followed by deliberate action continual conscious monitoring of awareness of our own thoughts and actions

·        do it right commitment

·        persistence

·        optimism being willing to do the work you put in the effort

·        being patient discipline

·        staying consistent

·        working from a source of passion

·        maintaining self-control finding a way to become more efficient through organization

qualities characteristic of failure include:

·        whimsical far

·        apathy

·        fear

·        worry

·        isolation

·        feelings of unworthiness

·        lack of inspiration how

·        plain boredom

Self-esteem can be defined by or in a variety of different ways but ultimately it comes down to how you feel about yourself. How you feel about yourself is often based on the types of results behaviors actions and perhaps criticism that you receive from others even more importantly and more specifically though it also is a measure of what you think about yourself, how you see yourself , and your idea of how you think others see you. As much as we hear to these days about the importance and the value of being able to make good choices and to how our choices lead to our results or actions and behaviors I still want to search something interesting and that is that I believe that self-dominant most least in its large part is actually probably not built upon things outside of yourself that you have personal or you had power or control over rather I think that his thoughts and feelings that you have do you know based on those different negative behaviors performances and results that have built up overtime and overtime you have given them more value and you have derived from them the idea that you things you do not produce the outcomes you desire. But it's more important to look at self-esteem more once again is being about how you feel about yourself at each moment as your living life or as you're taking actions rarely will this be influenced by how you feel or be based on any comparison to others in short what I'm saying is softer esteem is not direct coming from or will not be developed by what other people say and it's also not going to be based on your results outcomes successes or failures in reality if you have a negative view of yourself you are seen as having self-esteem this will manifest in a lack of confidence perhaps pessimism well on the other hand if you have any more optimistic view of oneself you may be seen as having high self-esteem that is high which will result in things such as competence confidence Anne most importantly the things we can't get just from results self-acceptance and a newfound sense of optimism

When we take all this into consideration self-esteem is not something that thumbs just from within but rather something that comes from outside of us that influences us at any given moment yeah oftentimes it has nothing to do or any roots in reality but rather it's just based on somebody's thought perspective or their interpretation or their perception of what the real truth is the self-esteem becomes very fickle it shifts and one who is based on the current lives her life based on the current results and whatnot will not have a permanent self-esteem another concept itself idea essentially it is the version you see yourself of the version you see of yourself in the future it takes into consideration of variety of things including behavior in various conditions it is hopefully the best version or your best potential view for yourself it would be the ideal he VLC could not be the same person that you are today in fact it it's the person today that striving to become tomorrow next week next month next year and so forth and yet the ideal self is not perfection it is not a fixed place or definition of finished product in fact it's far from any of those things it is in fact a constant evolving changing element and such wow really promise is on facing now so I had jumbled up like this but I don't know that I don't know the rules and all that stuff it would you show still get she was doing look South movie that's not my talking right now I've already shut it off you know what it is hi the computers catching up to what I said that's why I looked you, and there it goes so we're done so now we look at it u look too short to me that's why I didn't think was there but she's still going let it go she going somewhat elusive in its nature yourself ideal encompasses so many things includes the roles you play mother father brother sister teacher, etc.

alue I wish first now to share with you:

Qualities and Characteristics of successful people. Use this list to identify areas of strength and weakness. Decide to Help from your strengths and at the same time commit to working on a Company look at this le of the ideas and behaviors that limit you the most

THINK

THINK

Getting the Edge on Life

I can remember the word written on the chalkboard in capital letters in one of my college courses for the entire course. I must admit I stole the idea many times myself. I would walk around and point to the word while failing to give any response or feedback.  Thinking is likely the most powerful tool for good or bad. Furthermore, thinking comes with countless benefits but only if used, for example,  knowing ourselves better. These are some major Edges that thinking can add to your Life.

  •              having more options in life space
  •               being able to tell facts from fiction
  •                knowing hype from phony hope space
  Additional consequences of negative thinking:

·       Increased life span
·       Lower rates of depression
·       Lower levels of distress
·       Greater resistance to the common cold
·       Better psychological and physical well-being
·       Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular                   disease
·        Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress

Thinking is so vital to your intellectual life, career, ability to solve life’s problems, creativity, and mental health. I will share its benefits throughout the content. Seeing as having a more a positive attitude has such powerful consequences for the individual who is stuck in negativity and their loved ones and the power of correctly practiced thinking has so many positive results for happiness, success, health, self-esteem, and the continual growth and change of the brain I decided to start with this point. Not too nag, but too hopefully help you to find what you are looking for.

Positive thinking: Stop negative self-talk to reduce stress

Positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health. Practice overcoming negative self-talk with examples provided.

By Mayo Clinic Staff

Is your glass half-empty or half-full?

The answer is either. Both are correct. However, those who answer that the cup is half full may be perceiving and seeing the world differently than many can comprehend despite other trite achievements  like winning the Pulitzer prize, the Noble peace price, or is generally just happier. Probably happier than you.  Seeing the good in life boosts our view on life, on ourselves

Being optimistic or pessimistic may even affect your health.

Indeed, some studies show that personality traits such as optimism and pessimism can affect many areas of your health and well-being.

The positive thinking that usually comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management.

And effective stress management is associated with many health benefits.

If you tend to be pessimistic, do not despair — you can learn positive thinking skills.

Understanding positive thinking and self-talk

Positive thinking does not mean that you avoid your negativity and reality. What it means is that you approach the disagreeable ways of the world with a more productive manner.  We all get dealt bad hands. Its how you play them not statistical bad luck that leads to dealing with the problems you can. Also, you picture the possible outcomes less savagely. If you miss work, you just do your best and move on. I rather become convinced that there is a conspiracy to fire me and that I will live under the bridge if I cannot penetrate their evil network.

To become more optimistic try working on your self-talk. Self-talk is the constant recycling of thoughts that run through your head. These are called automatic thoughts. They are not all positive or all negative.  Some of your self-talk comes from rationality and explanation.  Other self-talk comes from misconstructions that you have.

If your thoughts mostly negative your view of life is more pessimistic. If your thoughts are you have an optimistic view on life who practices positive thinking.

The health benefits of positive thinking

Researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. Health benefits that positive thinking may provide include:

Increased life span

Lower rates of depression

Lower levels of distress

Greater resistance to the common cold

Better psychological and physical well-being

Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease

Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress

It's unclear why people who engage in positive thinking experience these health benefits. One theory is that having a positive outlook enables you to cope better with stressful situations, which reduces the harmful health effects of stress on your body.

It's also thought that positive and optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles — they get more physical activity, follow a healthier diet, and don't smoke or drink alcohol in excess.

Identifying negative thinking

Not sure if your self-talk is positive or negative? Some common forms of negative self-talk include:

Filtering. You magnify the negative aspects of a situation and filter out all of the positive ones. For example, you had a great day at work. You completed your tasks ahead of time and were complimented for doing a speedy and thorough job. That evening, you focus only on your plan to do even more tasks and forget about the compliments you received.

Personalizing. When something bad occurs, you automatically blame yourself. For example, you hear that an evening out with friends is canceled, and you assume that the change in plans is because no one wanted to be around you.

Catastrophizing. You automatically anticipate the worst. The drive-through coffee shop gets your order wrong and you automatically think that the rest of your day will be a disaster.

Polarizing. You see things only as either good or bad. There is no middle ground. You feel that you have to be perfect or you're a total failure.

Focusing on positive thinking

You can learn to turn negative thinking into positive thinking. The process is simple, but it does take time and practice — you're creating a new habit, after all. Here are some ways to think and behave in a more positive and optimistic way:

Identify areas to change. If you want to become more optimistic and engage in more positive thinking, first identify areas of your life that you usually think negatively about, whether it's work, your daily commute or a relationship. You can start small by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way.

Check yourself. Periodically during the day, stop and evaluate what you're thinking. If you find that your thoughts are mainly negative, try to find a way to put a positive spin on them.

Be open to humor. Give yourself permission to smile or laugh, especially during difficult times. Seek humor in everyday happenings. When you can laugh at life, you feel less stressed.

Follow a healthy lifestyle. Aim to exercise for about 30 minutes on most days of the week. You can also break it up into 10-minute chunks of time during the day. Exercise can positively affect mood and reduce stress. Follow a healthy diet to fuel your mind and body. And learn techniques to manage stress.

Surround yourself with positive people. Make sure those in your life are positive, supportive people you can depend on to give helpful advice and feedback. Negative people may increase your stress level and make you doubt your ability to manage stress in healthy ways.

Practice positive self-talk. Start by following one simple rule: Don't say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to anyone else. Be gentle and encouraging with yourself. If a negative thought enters your mind, evaluate it rationally and respond with affirmations of what is good about you. Think about things you're thankful for in your life.

Here are some examples of negative self-talk and how you can apply a positive thinking twist to them:

Putting positive thinking into practice

Negative self-talk

Positive thinking

I've never done it before.

It's an opportunity to learn something new.

It's too complicated.

I'll tackle it from a different angle.

I don't have the resources.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

I'm too lazy to get this done.

I wasn't able to fit it into my schedule, but I can re-examine some priorities.

There's no way it will work.

I can try to make it work.

It's too radical a change.

Let's take a chance.

No one bothers to communicate with me.

I'll see if I can open the channels of communication.

I'm not going to get any better at this.

I'll give it another try.

Practicing positive thinking every day

If you tend to have a negative outlook, don't expect to become an optimist overnight. But with practice, eventually your self-talk will contain less self-criticism and more self-acceptance. You may also become less critical of the world around you.

When your state of mind is generally optimistic, you are better able to handle everyday stress in a more constructive way. That ability may contribute to the widely observed health benefits of positive thinking.

Another advantage to being coming over a better thinker is. As we begin to use our decision-making qualities, we become more decisive in our thinking and in the choices that we make. In the process we are going to become one who is more listened, too, influential, and persuasive.

Blast off bottom-line: “We are what we think.”

The world, ourselves, our deepest emotional and spiritual feelings are ultimately constructing.  “We are what we think.”

Let us explore the power of the mind.  Say, for example you set up a joke where a new friend meets and pretends to hate one of your group. While acting on those feelings, whether they are true or not emotions of hate, fear, anger, betrayal, and more would be invoked. Attending a movie evokes, tears, laughter, regrets, fears, and so on despite that it’s a movie it's not happening it's for real. It is still sending or sending signals down the nervous system.

The brain is us.

To become a better more versatile, efficient, and happy person building the mind is the key. This can be done by challenging your mind. Leonardo da Vinci uses an analogy, supported by research today, and when he said “just like rust unless it is you saw our intellectual ability or is not going to maintain itself. If we do not continue to use it. Research at UCLA has demonstrated that in fact, we have learned that if you decrease input into the mind. You will lose structure. The brain is like a muscle, use it. He gets bigger and stronger; do not you begin to well lose the brain. It turns out more and more as we learn has an ability to reorganize itself, it can grow within limits. We have also found that the brain is a powerful tool for helping us to explore our universe, whether it be space are different maths and sciences and other subjects. And now we have this subject of the brain itself, the neuroscience and how the brain works. Furthermore, in looking at the brain, one of the things that we do not have is the code for its DNA, it has not yet been deciphered brain research may still be at a stage before even Newton's discovery of gravity. It's rather crude in the sense. What makes us also much more difficult is that the brain is massive and very mysterious and XM is trying to find that word cryptic thing. These trillion cells in the brain. 100 billion of them are nuance neurons that are devoted to the thinking process. Period. Each of those on average reaches out to make 1000. Thanks, thousands and thousands of other contexts. For you to look along the entire labyrinth of the journey. We could take, and probably exceed the number of atoms in the universe. Neurons cannot communicate quite to the extent but the number of real potential pathways in the brain is still completely up to the imagination. With such complexity can our brain even begin to start to think and understand learn about itself. Perhaps this is the biggest problem we have attempting to get to know our mind. With the use of our mind. So, like using pliers to try to grasp something. While this obstacle may seem theoretically insurmountable. Practically, do we experienced the ability to reflect on our thought, and any attempt to escape this cyclic conundrum? In other words, metacognition. We will frequently stress communicating our thinking in writing, and in dialogue so that we get an objective. And now analyze genuinely analyze the results of our thinking. One of the best ways to understand what is in our mind, so that what comes out of it.

Hi! I would like to tell you a little about myself.

My passion in life is to bring you information ideas and provoking means for expanding of your world. I have discovered my life’s purpose. Simply put it is to have a profound effect on people. If you really break it all down everything else dies. Now I am not doing this half ass. My goal is to empower, challenge, inspire, and share knowledge with you that will lead you to your optimal potential. With a Master’s degree in education, 10 years of teaching experience and an additional 2 years of college where I studied substance use disorders, I have learned  how people learn , I've studied how they grow , I know how to make you think, I am aware of the areas that we as humans need to change. Moreover I've fought a long struggle with depression and anxiety and itds only after many years of working with cognitive behavioral therapy and finding a great mentor and counselor that I have learned to manage these conditions. What is remarkable about treating mental illnesses is that ultimately you find that we all have issues just more extreme more exaggerated and extreme. Humans suffer from thinking errors regardless of whether they carry a diagnosis or label as being mentally ill or having mental health issues. Additionally, I have worked as a caseworker and or my time as a teacher my specialty was in working with those children there were labeled as problems. I have studied psychology, philosophy, theology, sociology, literature, politics, counseling, mental illness, substance use disorders, behavioral disorders such as bulimia and anorexia, gambling addiction, sex addiction, and other behavior disorders. In working through my own issues , in working with others issues, in developing a psychology of success that I delivered to some of the most difficult children in some of the most impoverished school situations in this country with great success. I come to you with no blinders on. I am always learning, and I am a humble teacher that will learn as much from you as you will for me. that I hold the title expert an expert on human behavior on human motivation on personal growth self-development self-esteem and some cutting-edge psychology and physics related theories on human growth and behavior. I always will approach everything that I do with the knowledge, the knowledge that the most intelligent people have, which is that they really do not know that much. So together let's challenge each other, let's grow together, let's learn to love and accept ourselves as we are right now in this moment regardless of our weaknesses and limitations, and let's begin a journey towards excellence. Let's figure out where we belong on this planet, what’s your purpose is, how you can make a difference and find happiness, love, and how you can enjoy an abundant life. I do not come to you with any promises of any easy solutions you will have to work through this. And even after you work through it the reality of life is that bad things happen. Loved ones die. Accidents can take this by surprise totally spin us around. So as we approach this I'm going to help you to build a life strategy they will not only take into account your goals, your passions, your career , your finances, relationships , but also a plan for the tragic times. Our goal here is to become a full self-actualized human in mind ,body, spirit, and emotion.

Every Man Should Live By a Code: Here as some thoughts.

What should A Man’s Code Include

A man should have a code that he lives by. A belief system that guides his character and behavior. It cannot be written as a law. Rather it is a set of standards that he lives by. Informing your code, I will offer many ideas to consider. Ultimately it is up to you to decide what you will live and die for and possibly by. For me, integrity is the greatest value. Integrity is not honesty. It is a deal that you make with yourself and never break. It is what you do when nobody is looking, but more importantly, it is your unfailing refusal to lie or avoid telling the truth because it may be inconvenient or unhelpful to you.  It is a refusal to ever fail to support others by hiding. As Sam Houston put it, “Do what is right and damn the consequences.” I am a stand-up guy, and you can trust I will always be there no matter my personal risks to do the right thing. It can also mean lying to protect the good. Here are some quotes to give you a flavor.

By the way, I hold everyone to these standards. Be a man or a woman of character and if you should hurt someone or me because you are a coward or self-serving. I will hunt you down and make you pay. You have been warned. If you do not like it than have nothing to do with me. May you never allow me to put my sights on you or hear of you.

Some ideas to think over.

“Masculinity is not something given to you, but something you gain. And you gain it by winning small battles with honor.” -Norman Mailer

“If you are going through hell, keep going.” -Winston Churchill

“Do what thy manhood bids thee do, from none but self-expect applause; He noblest lives and noblest dies who makes and keeps his self-made laws.” -Richard Francis Burton

“Here is the manliness of manhood, that a man has a good reason for what he does and has a will in doing it.” -Alexander MacLaren

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” -Ernest Hemingway

“It is not the size of the dog in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the dog.” -Mark Twain

“The coward is the one who lets his fear overcome his sense of duty. Duty is the essence of manhood.” -George S. Patton

“Scar tissue is stronger than regular tissue. Realize the strength, move on.” -Henry Rollins

“The greatest thing a man can do in this world, is to make the most possible out of the stuff that has been given him. This is success, and there is no other.” -Orison Swett Marden

“Courage – a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” -William Tecumseh Sherman

” In the end what separates a man from a slave? Money? Power? No, a man chooses, and a slave obeys!” -Andrew Ryan

“We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm. -George Orwell

“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places.”

-Hemmingway
